The Ryder Cup was, as always, a great spectacle, it produced some great golf and although it was a comfortable win in the end for the European team, there was one point on Sunday with McDowell trailing by three to Jordan Spieth and Rose by four to Hunter Mahan that the result was a little more in the balance.
If you look at the sessions individually the Americans actually won the Fourballs and the Singles was also very close, but the European team was so dominant in the Foursomes winning those two sessions 7-1 in total which is amazing when you take into account how close all of the other sessions were. Foursomes is not the easiest form of the game and I think you have to say that the Europeans seem more of a team unit and captain Paul McGinley obviously matched his pairing better and in general created more of a bond in the team. Tom Watson made some strange decisions, especially not playing Spieth and Reed on Friday afternoon and then leaving Mickelson and Bradley out all together on Saturday.
There were some excellent performances on the American side, with Spieth, Jimmy Walker and Patrick Reed, all rookies incidentally, performing very well. Patrick Read could become the Americans version of Ian Poulter, he certainly threw himself into it and showed some great passion. It must be said though the Europeans were a much stronger team, with some great performances throughout the team. Justin Rose finished as top scorer and played some amazing golf especially in the Saturday morning Fourballs with Henrik Stenson, Rory grew into it producing some amazing stuff on Sunday to blow Fowler away, Jamie Donaldson was also excellent on his debut capping it off by securing the winning point. Ian Poulter had a quiet Ryder Cup by his standards but did produce an amazing chip in at a very crucial point on Saturday. All in all the Europeans produced a very solid team performance and deserved to retain the Ryder Cup.
Scoring was very good in Sunday's Bogey, Division I produced a three way tie on 4 up with Jason Willis coming out on top after count back with Stuart Stirling and Brian Harrison. Club Captain Micky Burch topped Division II on 3 up from Andre Pringle 2 up and Andy Hunt on level, Bruce Anthony continued a good run of form in Division III pipping Colin Lockwood on count back after both tied on 2 up, Nigel Clare 1 up was third. Shot of the day must go to Ben Cottingam who secured one of two two's on the Par 4 13th Hole, I am not sure we have had a two on that hole previously, the other sweep winners were Ady Bonnett, Danny Phillips, Luke Lawson and Brian Towers.
Congratulations to Tom Bingley who secured a 6 and 5 victory over Brendan Greville on Sunday to claim the Scratch Matchplay title.
The eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed that Rory McIlroy put a new Driver into play at the Ryder Cup, now considering how he hit his old one and the success that it had helped bring him , this new Vapor model must be something very special. I am in Scotland this week myself at the Nike Performance Centre based at Archerfield and am really looking forward to trying it and next years range of irons which also look very exciting.
